Do’s and Don’ts for Personal Injury Victims

Knowing what to do after you’ve experienced a personal injury isn’t easy. Here are some do’s and don’ts to help with the process.

  • Do seek legal advice. The insurance company’s job is to settle the claim for the least amount of money possible. They are not interested in protecting your long-term welfare. A lawyer who can advocate for your interests will ensure that you receive a settlement that best allows you to move forward with your life.

  • Do document everything. When it comes to settling a personal injury claim, there’s no such thing as too much documentation. Write down names, dates, and events as they occur — even if you aren’t sure the information will be of use. Take photographs and videos to document physical evidence of your injuries. Save all medical bills, test results, police reports, witness statements, and other correspondence related to your case.

  • Don’t discuss your case with the responsible party’s insurance company or their investigators without first contacting a personal injury lawyer. It’s likely that you’ll be pressured to get the issues resolved as quickly as possible, even though a speedy settlement may not be in your best interests.

  • Don’t agree to sign any legal documents until you’ve had them reviewed by a lawyer and are positive you understand the terms of the settlement. Some companies will try to take advantage of people who are injured, scared, and confused by pressuring them into signing. Once you’ve signed away certain legal rights, it’s impossible to get them back.
