Keeping Your Kids Safe During the Holidays

It’s this time of year when the kids stay home so they can take a couple of weeks off, spend time with family, and generally enjoy the holidays without having to worry about school. Of course, that means they’ll likely be around whenever you need to get something done and certainly for any travelling to and from get-togethers. Here are some tips that you can use to keep your kids safe this holiday season.

When Out Shopping

Remember to take precautions when you’re out and about and you need to bring the kids along. Watch out for cars or even distracted pedestrians in parking lots to make sure you or your child isn’t caught under foot. If they’re still young, keep a hold of their hand and take the time to explain safety precautions like the importance of staying close to you in crowded areas.

At Family Gatherings

When your over at another family member’s house or hosting your own holiday shindig put someone in charge – or rotate the responsibility – of watching the kids to make sure they don’t get into too much trouble. You’ll want to keep any candles, lights, or wires out of the reach of little ones, and if you’re feeling festive enough to put up real holly and mistletoe remember to not let kids chew on them since they are poisonous if ingested. Since you may have a lot of people present you’ll also want to make sure your kids pay attention to hygiene and wash their hands regularly so as not to catch something that might make them sick.

Safe Travels

When travelling you’ll need to take the usual precautions like car seats and general medical supplies like any useful over-the-counter medicines and a few Band-Aids just in case. If you have an infant or toddler and plan on staying somewhere for a longer period you may want to bring some childproofing supplies like safety gates, outlet covers, and cabinet locks.

Whether you’re heading out or staying at home you can make all of your festive celebrations safe for your kids with just a few common-sense precautions. However, if you or your child were injured in an unexpected way, or through the fault of another, you should seek legal help to fight for the compensation your family deserves.
