Summer Driving Tips to Avoid Car Accidents

Are you looking forward to getting away for a vacation with your family this summer? Many people schedule time off from work when their children are off school so that they can take a much-needed break and enjoy time together. If you are planning to drive to your vacation spot, whether it’s to a cottage, trailer, relative’s home or you’ll be hitting the road to explore part of the country, it’s important to stay safe. We’ve compiled some summer driving tips to avoid car accidents to help you stay safe on the road

Summer Driving Tips to Avoid Car Accidents

  • Be sure that you are well rested before leaving on a trip. Driving when you are tired increases the chance of being involved in an accident.
  • Avoid operating your vehicle when you are tired. Share the driving duties with your spouse, partner or another adult in your group.
  • Don’t allow children to climb around in your car or fight while you are on the road. Make sure that they are securely buckled into their seats at all times. A bump from behind you or too much noise coming from the back of your vehicle may be all it takes to distract you from keeping your eyes on the road.
  • If you will be making a long trip in the car, schedule regular breaks so that everyone can get out, stretch their legs, use the washroom and have something to eat and drink. Children are less likely to become bored and restless, and you are more likely to stay alert if you are well hydrated and are eating regularly.
  • Turn off your cell phone while driving. They can take your focus away from arriving safely at your destination. If you leave the phone on and let it go to voice mail, you may be tempted to pick it up to see who called. Eliminate this temptation by shutting it off completely. You can check messages and return called when you stop for a break.
