What to do if Your Home is Damaged by a Faulty Product

After serious damage, like fire, has happened it’s important to ascertain the cause. Damage can happen in many ways but sometimes it is due to a flawed or poorly installed product. Small appliances can short out and may singe your counter or cause smoke damage in your kitchen. Often, however, the cause of major damage is a fire caused by major piece of equipment like a furnace, stove, or water heater. It’s also possible that improper installation of plumbing or fixtures could cause water damage which can cost a significant sum to repair.

After the Damage

After the damage is done make sure to let all relevant parties know what happened. In the case of fire that could mean the fire department and the police department, and in most every case that will also include your insurance company. Get reports and estimates of the damage so you understand exactly how much it will cost to make the necessary repairs and replace any equipment damaged too severely. Your insurance company may or may not choose to honour your claim for whatever reason and if they select not to you will need to seek other recourse.

Determining Fault

If the particular product is found to have a fault that caused the damage the manufacturer can certainly be held liable. If the installer knowingly installed something they knew was faulty or, alternatively, simply installed in a way that made it unsafe that installer could be held liable. In any case, legal action will need to be taken if they are unwilling to pay for damages and for any additional work time lost or mental anguish you may have suffered.
